The latest results indicated the remediation process for Legionella eradication have been extremely successful, and the samples, which included six water samples found only one positive indication of Legionella in a cold water faucet in building 30. Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry for Veterans - VA's Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit on-line Registry allows Veterans and Servicemembers to document their exposures and report possible health concerns through an online questionnaire. Veterans and Servicemembers who were close to burn pit smoke or exposed for longer periods may be at greater risk for health problems. Health effects from burn pit exposure will vary and depend on a number of factors such as the kind of waste being burned, pre-existing conditions, and wind direction. (11/12/2014)

Legionella Update – Tucson VA - Earlier this month we notified staff, Congressional offices and the public about positive test indications for Legionella in the facility’s water. This week we received the results of our retesting and overall there has been improvement. The retests have indicated traces of Legionella in Building 2 and Building 38. These findings were from three isolated areas, one in Building 2 and two in Building 38. Point of Use Filters that block Legionella have been installed on all of the fixtures that tested positive. Tucson VA Legionella Test Results - Legionella is present in natural and artificial water environments worldwide. Person-to-person transmission of Legionella disease does not occur. The Tucson VA conducts quarterly Legionella tests by drawing water samples from at least 10 outlets on the hot water distribution system and at least 10 outlets on the cold water distribution system from inpatient hospital areas. The mission of the SWBRC is to enhance the quality of life for Veterans with vision loss through participation in a comprehensive, Veteran-centered and individualized blind rehabilitation program, so they may successfully reintegrate back into their community and family environments. Tucson VA Opens New Safford Community Based Outpatient Clinic - Tucson, AZ – The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) is opening the new Safford VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. The new clinic location will accommodate Veterans in the Safford/Thatcher, Clifton, Southeastern Arizona and western New Mexico area with high quality health care for enrolled Veterans and future Veterans living in those areas who are eligible for VA health care. VA Funds Arizona Agencies in Battle to End Homelessness - Tucson, Arizona – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald announced today the award of $ 8,263,894 in homeless prevention grants to the Arizona counties of: Cochise, Coconino, Graham, Greenlee, Maricopa, Mohave, Pima, Pinal, Santa Cruz, Yuma, and Yavapai, and the Indian Reservations of San Carlos Apache, Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui and the Indian Nations of Coconino and Yavapai, Navajo and Hopi, and Yavapai-Apache. The grants will serve approximately 2,095 homeless and at-risk Veteran families as part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. (08/12/2014)

FOUR CHAPLAIN MEMORIAL SERVICE - Tucson, AZ – The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) is pleased to announce that they will again be participating in the City of Tucson, Veterans’ Affairs Committee (VAC) annual Four Chaplains Memorial Service, Scheduled for Sunday – February 2, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., at the Kino Veterans Memorial Park, 2805 E. THE TUCSON GARDEN RAILWAY SOCIETY - Tucson, AZ – The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) will be hosting the Tucson Garden Railway Society of Tucson during the holiday season. Numerous operational train displays will be set-up in the R.E. Lindsey Jr. Auditorium, Building 4 for patients, employees, volunteers, families, children, and especially the young at heart. The train show will be held on Friday- December 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Monday – December 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the viewing public. The show will feature the earliest model trains to modern trains running on our Nation’s tracks today. (11/27/2013)

TUCSON ELECTRIC POWER HELPING EXPECTANT WOMEN VETERANS - Tucson, AZ –Tucson Electric Power (TEP), as part of their “Days of Caring” program, will be stuffing 20 baby car seats with new baby items. All items will be given to expectant women enrolled in the Veterans Women’s Wellness Program. The car seats will be presented to expectant moms at a special “Baby Shower” at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) on Saturday – October 26, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the R.E. 7TH ANNUAL 2013 VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION EVENT - The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) will be hosting and joining the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA); VA Regional Office; VA Vet Center; National, State, and local Veterans service organizations for the 7th Annual “2013 Veterans Day Celebration Event.” The event will be Saturday – November 9, 2013, from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the VA Medical Center (Sports Park) at 3601 South Sixth Avenue, Tucson, Arizona. Gathering of American Indian Veterans on September 22, 2013 - Tucson, AZ – The Coalition of American Indian Veterans, which includes the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), Indian Health Service, and the Tucson Indian Center, along with Tribal Veterans Organizations, is hosting the 7th Annual Gathering of American Indian Veterans. The event will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Casino Del Sol Conference Center “Indoors” at 5655 W. Valencia Road, Tucson, Arizona from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. (07/31/2013)

$300 Milion in Grants To Help End Veterans' Homelessness - WASHINGTON D.C. – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki announced on Thursday, July 11 the award of nearly $300 million in grants that will help approximately 120,000 homeless and at-risk Veterans and their families. The grants have been awarded to 319 community agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. (07/31/2013)

SAVAHCS COMMITTED TO EQUAL CARE FOR LGBT PATIENTS - Tucson, AZ – The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) is one of 121 of the nation’s 151 Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical centers participating in the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). SAVAHCS was been awarded Equality Leader status in the HEI 2013, welcoming Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Veteran patients who have served their country in continuing to provide them with high quality health care. SAVAHCS Hosts Memorial Day Ceremony - Tucson, AZ – The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) will be hosting and inviting patients, staff, visitors, and guests to the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 30th in the R.E. Lindsey Jr. Auditorium located in Building 4 at 10:00 a.m. The Keynote Speaker for this year’s ceremony will be Eric Kendle, M.D., Assistant Chief of Surgery for SAVAHCS, and also a Colonel assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters Arizona, of the Air National Guard. Dr. Kendle has had two previous assignments in Operation Iraqi Freedom. (05/29/2013)

VA UNDER SECRETARY TO PRESENT THE ROBERT W. CAREY TROPHY AWARD FOR PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE TO SAVAHCS - Tucson, AZ – On Thursday, May 16, the VA Under Secretary for Health Robert A. Petzel, M.D. will be presenting to the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System Director the prestigious 2012 Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence trophy award. The ceremony will take place at the medical center Rose Garden at 3601 South Sixth Avenue, the public is invited to attend. (05/08/2013)
