Tucson VA Staff to participate in 2016 Four Chaplains Memorial Service
February 3, 2016
TUCSON, AZ – Staff members from the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) will be participating in the City of Tucson, Veterans’ Affairs Committee annual Four Chaplains Memorial Service, Sunday, February 7 at 1:00 p.m., at Kino Veterans Memorial Park, 2805 E. Ajo Way. The park is located across from the Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The memorial service honors four World War II Chaplains; Lt Clark Poling – Dutch Reformed Clergyman, Lt. Alexander David Good- Rabbi, Lt. George Lansing Fox- Methodist Clergyman, and Lt. John Washington – Catholic Priest. On February 3, 1943 their transport ship the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, was torpedoed by the German submarine U-223. These four men gave out all the life jackets and helped troops off the ship into life rafts. They also gave up their own life jackets and sacrificed their lives so others would survive.
The memorial service commemorates the heroic act by these men of faith from different and diverse religious denominations.
The SAVAHCS employees participating in the service will be: Dr. Martin Dresner, Chaplain Melvin Brinkley, both giving remarks and Chaplain David Lundell, providing invocation.
The Tucson community is invited to attend this free program honoring these brave men. For more information about the four chaplain’s ceremony, please contact Terry Byron at (520) 982-0023 from the City of Tucson, Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
