Suicide Prevention Program

Since 2007 all VA Facilities have implemented a Suicide Prevention Program under the leadership of a Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) at the local level. The SPCs facilitate the implementation of suicide prevention strategies through education, monitoring, and coordination of care. The program includes identifying and tracking patients assessed to be high-risk for suicide, conducting suicide prevention training for facility staff and community members, and providing enhanced care and support to Veterans who are vulnerable for suicidal behavior.  Suicide Prevention staff provide follow-up to Veterans who contact the National Veteran’s Crisis Line.
